Bee removal in Auckland costs anything from nothing to several hundred dollars. A honey bee swarm hanging in the open is often collected free by a beekeeper. Moving or removing a bumble bee nest is commonly around $100 to $150. Removing an established honey bee colony from a wall or roof starts from roughly $140 to $210 in published prices, and opening and repairing the wall is usually extra. The table below sets out each case, followed by what pushes the price up, how to get bees removed for free, and what to ask before you accept a quote. These figures are a guide: the specialist quotes the real price. For the bigger picture, see bee removal in Auckland.

How much does bee removal cost?
It depends on what you have. A swarm in the open is often free. A bumble bee nest is commonly around $100 to $150 to move or remove. An established honey bee colony inside a building is the expensive case: published prices for the bee removal start at roughly $140 to $210, before the cost of opening and repairing the wall or ceiling.
The jump in price for established colonies comes from the work. UC Riverside's bee lab says removing a colony from a building almost always means opening up the cavity, cutting out all the comb and honey, cleaning the space and repairing the wall. That can be one person for an hour, or several hours plus a builder, depending on the house.
Do you have to pay to get rid of bees?
Not always. In Auckland you often don't pay to have a honey bee swarm collected, because beekeepers want healthy swarms for their hives. The Auckland Beekeepers Club runs free swarm collection through volunteers. You usually do pay for bumble bee nests, for honey bees inside a building, and for anything that needs height equipment.
Free collection covers the easy case: a cluster of bees in the open that a collector can box up in under an hour. Honey and Bees New Zealand notes that beekeepers don't generally deal with bumble bee nests, so those need a pest control business or a bee specialist, at a cost. An established colony in a wall needs skilled work and repairs, and that is never free.
How do you get a bee hive removed for free?
If it is a honey bee swarm in the open, call a swarm collector. In Auckland, the Auckland Beekeepers Club offers free swarm collection, and Honey and Bees New Zealand lists collectors around the country. An established hive inside a wall, roof or tree is a different job, and you should expect to pay for it.
Tips to keep it free or cheap:
- Call early. A swarm collected while it is still hanging outside is free in many cases. The same bees a week later, inside your wall, can cost hundreds.
- Send a clear photo and say how high it is and what it is on.
- Make access easy. Clear the area and tell the collector about gates, dogs and parking.
- Don't spray first. Dead or angry bees are harder to collect, and beekeepers won't want them.
How much does it cost to remove a hive from a wall?
Published prices for removing honey bees from a wall cavity start from about $140 to $210 for the bee removal itself. That often doesn't include opening up the wall and repairing it afterwards. We didn't find an Auckland business that publishes a full price for cutting out a nest and making good the wall, so get that part quoted separately.
What pushes the price up:
- Size and age of the nest. A colony that has been there a year has far more comb and honey than one that moved in last week.
- Height and access. Second-storey walls, roof spaces and chimneys need ladders, scaffolding or a cherry picker.
- Cladding and linings. Weatherboards come off more easily than brick or plaster.
- Repairs. Some specialists close up the opening, others leave it for a builder.
- Live removal. Cutting out comb and rehoming the bees takes longer than killing the colony, but leaves no dead bees or honey in the wall.
Our page on bees in walls and roofs explains why the whole nest has to come out, and why spraying a wall colony is a false saving.
What makes a bee removal quote cheaper or dearer?
The biggest factors are the type of bees, where the nest is, how long it has been there and whether repairs are included. Travel, after-hours call-outs and a second visit to check the nest is gone can add to the price. A good quote lists each part, so you can compare like with like.
Bees defending an established nest can become aggressive once the nest is opened, which is one reason specialists need full protective gear and price the job carefully. If someone offers a cheap insecticide treatment for a honey bee colony in your wall, ask what happens to the comb and honey afterwards.
Questions people ask
How much do beekeepers charge to remove bees?
Many Auckland beekeepers collect honey bee swarms for free, because a healthy swarm is valuable to them. Beekeepers who also run bee removal businesses charge for harder jobs. One Auckland business publishes $210 for removing bees from a wall cavity. Beekeepers don't generally take bumble bee nests, so those go to pest control businesses.
How do you get rid of bees for free?
Wait, or call a swarm collector. Most honey bee swarms leave on their own within a day or two, and in Auckland they are often collected free. Bumble bee nests die off by themselves within a few months, so leaving one is free too. See our page on bumble bee nests. Established honey bee colonies in buildings need paid removal.
How much is it to get rid of a bee nest?
For a bumble bee nest, published prices from New Zealand businesses are commonly around $100 to $150. For a honey bee nest inside a wall or roof, expect from about $140 to $210 for the bee removal, plus repairs if the wall needs opening. A swarm in the open is often free.
What should a bee removal quote include?
A clear quote says what kind of bees the specialist thinks they are, whether they will remove them alive or kill them, whether all the comb and honey comes out, and whether opening and repairing the wall is included. It should also say whether GST is included, and what happens if bees return.
Is it legal to have beehives in a residential area of Auckland?
Yes. Auckland Council allows beekeeping in urban areas, as long as the beekeeper takes reasonable steps to prevent nuisance, covering hive position, bee temperament, swarming, water and bee droppings. Every hive must be registered with NZ Bee Health and Biosecurity, and bees in a public park need council permission.
