Bee removal in Auckland comes down to two questions: what kind of bees are they, and where is the nest? A honey bee swarm hanging on a branch is often collected free by a local beekeeper. A bumble bee nest can usually be left to die off, or moved. An established honey bee colony inside a wall or roof has to be cut out completely, comb and honey included, and that is skilled, paid work. Wasps are a job for pest control. This page helps you work out which case you have, what each one costs, and what to do next. When you are ready, you can get quotes from local specialists with one short form.
What kind of bee problem do you have?
Most bee problems in Auckland fall into one of four cases: a honey bee swarm in the open, a bumble bee nest, an established honey bee colony in a building or tree, or wasps mistaken for bees. Look from a safe distance at the insects and how many come and go, then match it to the table below. Each case has a different fix and a very different price.
| What you see | What it probably is | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|
| A cluster of bees the size of a football or bigger, hanging from a branch, fence, post or car | A honey bee swarm | A swarm collector boxes it up, often free |
| A few large, fuzzy bees an hour using a hole in the ground, compost, a wall or under a shed | A bumble bee nest | Leave it to die off, or have it moved |
| A steady stream of small brown bees in and out of one gap in a wall, roof, chimney or tree | An established honey bee colony | A specialist cuts out the whole nest |
| Shiny black and yellow insects with narrow waists, and a grey or brown papery nest | Wasps | Pest control treatment |

Who removes bees in Auckland?
Beekeepers collect most honey bee swarms, often for free, through groups such as the Auckland Beekeepers Club. Bee removal specialists handle established colonies in walls and roofs, and many rehome the bees. Pest control businesses deal with wasps and often with bumble bee nests, which beekeepers don't generally take.
Which one you need depends on the case. If you are not sure, describe what you see when you ask for quotes, and send a photo if asked. A specialist can usually tell from a photo whether it is a swarm, a bumble bee nest, an established colony or wasps. Anyone who takes the bees away to keep in a hive must be a registered beekeeper under the American Foulbrood National Pest Management Plan.
How much does bee removal cost in Auckland?
A honey bee swarm in the open is often collected free. Moving or removing a bumble bee nest is commonly around $100 to $150. Removing an established honey bee colony from a wall or roof starts from roughly $140 to $210 in published prices, with opening and repairing the wall usually quoted on top. Height, access and the size of the nest change the price most.
Our full guide to bee removal cost in Auckland has a table of price ranges for each case, what makes a quote cheaper or dearer, and how to keep it free when it can be.
Why shouldn't you spray bees?
Spraying rarely solves a bee problem. Honey and Bees New Zealand advises against spraying swarms, because insecticide can make the bees sick or kill them, and a swarm usually leaves or can be collected anyway. On an established colony, spraying leaves the combs and honey behind in the wall, where they can melt and attract other bees.
There is a disease reason too. NZ Bee Health and Biosecurity explains that American foulbrood, a fatal bacterial disease of honey bee brood, spreads when weak or abandoned colonies are robbed by bees from nearby hives. A colony killed and left inside a wall is exactly that kind of target, and poisoned honey harms the bees that rob it. Insecticide treatment is the right tool for wasps, not for honey bees.
Are bees near your house dangerous?
Usually not. Honey and Bees New Zealand says bees in a swarm are not aggressive unless provoked, and the NZ Bumblebee Conservation Trust says bumble bees only defend a nest that is disturbed. The risk comes from disturbing a nest, mowing over an entrance or opening a wall, when honey bees can become aggressive in defence of their nest.
Keep children and pets away from any nest or swarm, and don't try to knock, spray or block it. If someone is stung, Health New Zealand advises scraping out a honey bee stinger quickly, washing the area and using an ice pack. Call 111 if someone has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or feels faint. For non-urgent advice, Healthline is free on 0800 611 116.
Which bees and wasps live in Auckland?
The bees you are most likely to deal with are honey bees and bumble bees, both introduced. Te Ara records that honey bees, Apis mellifera, arrived in 1839, when Mary Bumby brought hives to the Hokianga. Four bumble bee species were brought from England in 1885 and 1906 to pollinate red clover. New Zealand also has 28 native bee species, which are small and mostly solitary.
Native bees mostly nest alone in burrows in the ground or in old twig and beetle holes. They are small, easy to miss and not the bees people call a removal service about.
Wasps are often mistaken for bees. The Department of Conservation lists the German wasp, the common wasp and paper wasps as pests in New Zealand. German and common wasps are black and yellow and build large grey or brown paper nests, often underground or in cavities. If your problem turns out to be wasps, a pest control business is who you need.
How do you get quotes for bee removal?
Fill in the short form on this page or on our get quotes page. Say what you see, where the bees are, how high up, and how long they have been there. A local specialist gets back to you to ask questions and quote. You decide whether to go ahead.
The more detail you give, the better the first quote. A photo taken from a safe distance helps, and so does saying whether you want the bees saved or don't mind either way. For a swarm in the open, also consider calling a free swarm collector: if it is easy to reach, that may be all you need.
Questions people ask
Can I remove a bee hive myself?
Not an established honey bee colony, unless you are a beekeeper with a bee suit and the know-how. It means opening the cavity, cutting out thousands of bees' worth of comb and cleaning the space. A swarm is better left to a collector. A bumble bee nest can usually be left to die off. Our guide on how to get rid of a bees nest safely explains the options.
What actually keeps bees away from a house?
Sealing gaps. Swarms look for dry, sheltered cavities, so close gaps in cladding, eaves, soffits, vents and around pipes before swarm season, which in New Zealand runs from about August to January. Seal any cavity where bees nested before, but only once the old nest has been fully removed, because old comb attracts new swarms.
How many bees live in a hive?
A honey bee colony has thousands of bees, and a strong one many more. A bumble bee nest is far smaller, from a few dozen to a few hundred. That difference is why a honey bee colony in a wall is a big job and a bumble bee nest usually isn't.
Where do I report a bee swarm in Auckland?
You don't have to report a swarm to anyone, but you can ask for it to be collected. The Auckland Beekeepers Club runs free swarm collection through volunteers, and Honey and Bees New Zealand lists swarm collectors around the country. Check it is bees and not wasps first, and send a photo if asked.
What bee removal jobs cost the most?
Established honey bee colonies inside buildings. The whole nest has to come out, which means opening a wall, ceiling or roof, cutting out all the comb and honey, cleaning the cavity and repairing it. Height, the size of the nest and how long it has been there all add to the price.
